Your 45 RPM Adapter Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

Your record collection already says a lot about you.

Maybe you spent years tracking down a particular soul 45. Maybe your shelves lean punk, garage, reggae, disco, funk, indie, oldies, oddities, or some very specific combination that makes perfect sense only to you.

Then you put that record on your turntable and stick a boring little piece of metal or plastic in the middle.

Functional? Sure.

But it could be so much more fun!

First things first: what is a 45 RPM adapter?

A 45 RPM record adapter fits into the large center hole found on many 7-inch records so the record can be played on a standard turntable spindle. You might also hear them called 45 adapters, record inserts, spindle adapters, or 7-inch adapters.

They are essential. Yet for some reason, most of them have historically been purely utilitarian.

Which is exactly why I wanted to make them differently.

Your records aren’t generic. Why should your adapter be?

ModMini actually started because I really, really wanted a gold glitter 45 adapter.

I searched for one for more than a year and came up empty. Eventually I learned how to make my own, which turned into a long stretch of experimenting, mold-making, testing, refining, sanding, polishing, and saying some probably impolite things about this great idea of mine.

The full saga lives in the ModMini About page, but the short version is this: I wanted a 45 adapter that worked properly and made me happy every time I put on a record.

That is still the point.

I make my handmade 45 RPM adapters in small batches in San Francisco, with designs ranging from vintage glitter to safety pins, sprinkles, bold tints, translucent colors, and whatever else has worked its way into my brain and onto my worktable.

Some sparkle. Some are tinted with translucent color. All have a personality of their own.

Just like your records.

Small turntable accessory, big personality

A 45 adapter might be one of the smallest things in your vinyl setup, but it sits right in the middle of the record while it plays.

That makes it a very good place to add a little personality.

I play with color, opacity, texture, density, and different materials so the adapters feel more like tiny design objects than pieces of generic audio hardware. Many are made in very small quantities, and variations in the materials and casting mean individual pieces can have their own character.

In other words: one-of-a-kind is very much welcome around here.

Browse the ModMini 45 adapter collection and you’ll find aqua and gold vintage glitter, silver safety pins, sprinkles, bright red, pale pink, emerald green, blue glitter flakes, neon colors, and combinations that may never show up again. (Well, you can ask me for a custom one and I can try and come close.)

Hesitate responsibly. If you see something you adore, it may not be there next time!

A little weight goes a long way

There’s also something I notice the second I pick up a 45 adapter: the weight.

Some basic plastic adapters are incredibly lightweight. That works, technically, but hollow injection-molded adapters can feel flimsy and may shift around during quick record changes.

ModMini adapters are not record weights or clamps. They’re not designed to press the record down. At approximately 20g / 0.7oz, they’re still light, but they feel substantial and weigh about four times as much as the hollow, machine-made plastic dome adapters I compared them with. Each adapter is approximately 1.5 inches round by 0.75 inches high. They feel really nice in your hand and satisfying to set onto the spindle.

That little bit of extra heft makes a difference in use.

When I’m DJing, I might be changing records quickly in low light, grabbing the next 7-inch and dropping it onto the spindle without carefully checking the adapter first. I want to be able to toss on a record and keep moving without worrying that an ultra-light adapter has slipped or shifted underneath it.

It’s a small detail.

But those are exactly the kinds of details I obsessed over when making something I wanted to use myself.

A cool record accessory still needs to do its job

I love making creative, sparkly little objects, but a 45 adapter is not purely decorative.

It has a job.

So every ModMini adapter starts with a mold I made specifically for my process, gets finished by hand, and is tested for fit. Resin shrinks as it cures, and figuring out how to compensate for that took considerably more trial and error than I expected when I first had the seemingly innocent thought, “I’ll just make a glitter 45 adapter myself.”

That part of the process deserves its own story, so I wrote more about how I make and test my handmade 45 adapters.

Cute stuff is a dopamine hit to the brain.

Cute and functional is the emotional boost that keeps on giving.

For DJs, collectors, casual listeners and people who just like cool stuff

You do not need a museum-worthy record collection to justify a fun adapter.

You just need a 7-inch record with a large center hole and the desire to make putting it on your turntable approximately 83% more delightful.

And if you happen to be shopping for a vinyl collector who already owns every obvious record accessory? A one-of-a-kind 45 adapter also makes a very good small gift.

Especially if their records have more personality than their current generic plastic adapter.

Shop the ModMini 45 adapter collection to find the latest colors and styles. I make them in small batches, so once a particular design is gone, I may or may not make another one quite like it.
